I heard and Angels voice
There are times when something happens that defies a logical explanation. I’m not seeing flying saucers or the Loch Ness monster, but I know that the voice that guided me to safety was as real as you are.
It began when I was training for a marathon. I had never undertaken something so ambitious, although I was somewhat athletic in high school and college. This marathon was special because it benefited breast cancer research, and so many women I knew had experienced its ravages. So far, I was among the fortunate.
We live in the foothills of the Rockies, with picturesque trails through beautiful wooded areas. I had a favorite one that had its challenges and always left me feeling more confident that I could make the marathon run.
It was a bright Spring dawn when I set out for my thrice weekly run. Our collie, Mort, liked to run with me, so we began our routine circuit. It was nippy, but the early morning sun warmed my face.
Suddenly, Mort stopped ahead of me and began barking furiously. I thought he had spotted a rabbit or a squirrel, which he usually liked to chase. This time, he stood rigid.
I stopped running and went over to him. “What’s the matter, old boy? Getting tired?” I patted his head and could feel the tension in him. Then I saw it.
A bear. I had never seen one outside a zoo, and my first thought was how large it was. My second thought was how in the world we were going to get out of this in one piece. Not easily, to be sure.
Mort continued to bark, which I hoped would keep the bear at bay for at least a little while. I stood as still as I could, considering my legs felt weak and my heart was pounding.
Something – like a voice in my head – told me to back up very slowly and not make any sudden move. I inched backward on the path. Mort must have heard the voice, too, because he continued barking, but he also began slowly retreating.
Then an amazing thing happened. We heard a rustle behind the bear and three little furry heads peeked out from the brush and made puppy-like sounds. This was a mother bear and she was only protecting her babies. She turned toward them and gently rounding them up, the little family disappeared in the woods.
Mort and I waited a very short time to be sure it was safe, and then we made tracks for the car. I kept looking over my shoulder as we tried to quietly hurry away. Nothing was following us.
We sat in the car while I fought to regain my composure. I also thought about what had just happened, and I knew without a moment’s hesitation. It was the voice of my Guardian Angel that had guided Mort and me out of danger.
“Thank you. We couldn’t have done it without you.”
Yes, I ran the marathon, but I was much more selective in where we trained after that day.
