![]() Perhaps the greatest gift in the world is the birth of a baby, especially to a couple who thought it would never happen for them. Imagine their delight when the doctor told Lynn that she was, indeed, pregnant. With her husband John, Lynn was counting the days, then the months, and now it was time. Off to the hospital in the early hours of a Sunday morning, the young couple could not have been happier. As they drove along, the inevitable discussion turned to names - Alison for a girl, but no agreement on a boy's name. They bantered amiably about choices - Kevin, Rudolph, Angus, Oscar! Lynn laughed as contractions grew closer. Traffic on the expressway was light as they neared the exit ramp. Suddenly, coming toward them in the wrong direction was a weaving car! There were few choices for John, but he managed to avoid a head-on collision by inches. Their car landed on its side in the center culvert. John turned to Lynn and was terrified when he saw her, bleeding and struggling to free herself from the air bag. But that was only the beginning. The car was resting on the passenger side, and John was having difficulty opening his door. The electric windows wouldn't open, either. In minutes that felt like hours, good Samaritans were working to right the car. They succeeded and John opened his door. Before he could reach Lynn, a middle-age woman was at her side - soothing her with kind words, taking a pulse and measuring contractions. There was no time to waste: the baby was on its way and nothing was going to stop Nature's untimely decision. With agility and tenderness, the woman helped Lynn safely bring her little daughter into the world - not exactly as planned, but no less a blessing. Paramedics arrived just as little Alison's first cry resounded on the roadside. The woman stepped back as paramedics quickly took over. Just as quietly as she had appeared, she was gone. "She was truly an Angel," said Lynn. "I just wished I could have said thanks before she left." In her arms, Alison Angel Beckman slept in peace. |
