Angel Stories
Angel on My Shoulder

I was seven years old, and my new bike was my proudest possession. We lived in a small town that was safe for children to walk or bike to school, or even to go into the block-long business district to buy pop or candy.

Mom gave me permission to ride my beautiful red bicycle the short distance to school on that lovely Spring day. There were no bike paths then, so the sidewalks were allowed. I rode past my walking friends, and no doubt I was feeling pretty special.

I was almost to the school, well ahead of the foot traffic, and thinking about the many things that fill the head of a seven-year-old. Personal safety was not one of them.

Without pausing, I started to cross an alleyway between two buildings when I felt a hand literally grab me to a stop - just in time: a large truck was backing out of the alley and I was seconds from being under its huge wheels.

I looked around to see who had grabbed me, but no one was even in sight. Needless to say, I was shaken by the near miss. That afternoon, I told Mom what had happened - fearful that I would lose my bike privileges. But Mom just hugged me tightly and I still remember her words.

"That was your Guardian Angel, Meggie, and she's always sitting on your shoulder to protect you when I'm not around."
